Construction Zones and Passing Emergency Vehicles

In 2005, the Government of Alberta passed legislation designed to make our roads safer for construction workers, tow truck drivers and emergency responders. Emergency vehicles include tow trucks, fire trucks, ambulances, police vehicles and Municipal Enforcement vehicles. When passing an emergency vehicle with its flashing lights activated, motorists must slow down to 60 kilometres per hour or less.

Regular speed fines are doubled for failing to slow down when passing an emergency vehicle.

Reduce your speed in construction zones, and when passing City of Cold Lake maintenance or construction vehicles. These vehicles include:

  • Snow plows and graders,
  • Street sweepers,
  • Waste/recycling collection trucks,
  • Road construction and pothole repair equipment.
