School and Playground Zones

Each and every driver on the road has a role to play in ensuring children are safe when using or travelling to or from a school or playground. If you're unsure whether a school or playground speed zone is in effect during a particular day or time, slow down regardless. There's no harm in travelling too slow through a playground or school zone, but driving too fast could lead to injury or worse.  

School Zones

School zones are in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. every school day (Monday-Friday) from September 1 to June 30. The speed limit in school zones is 30 kilometres per hour. School zones are always identified with signs at the beginning and end of the speed zone. Watch for children crossing the road in all areas of a school zone, not only at marked crosswalks or intersections. 

Playground Zones

Playground zones are in effect from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset, 365 days per year. The speed limit in playground zones is 30 kilometres per hour. Playground zones are commonly located near playgrounds or public parks and are always identified with signs at the beginning and end of the speed zone. Watch for children crossing the road in all areas of a playground zone, not only at marked crosswalks or intersection.
